Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly spoke on the change of captaincy of the Indian team limited overs. The board chairman said he had personally requested Kohli not to relinquish his T20 captaincy responsibilities. Kohli stepped down as India captain in the short format in September. Three months after Kohli stepped down as T20 captain, the BCCI sacked him as ODI captain. He was replaced by opener Rohit Sharma.
“I personally request him (Kohli) not to relinquish the T20 captaincy. Obviously the workload will be on him. He is a great cricketer. He was captain for a long time. Captain changes happen. Because I’ve been a captain for so long, I know. Also they only wanted a white-ball captain. That’s why we made this decision. I do not know what’s going to happen in the future. But it’s a good team, with amazing players on the team. I hope they play well, ”Ganguly told News18.
“Understanding the workload is a very important thing. Considering my enormous workload over the last 8-9 years, I have been playing as a captain regularly for the last 5-6 years, playing all 3 formats. I am looking to reduce the burden to be fully prepared for leadership. That is why I am stepping down from the T20 captaincy, ”Kohli said at the time.
