Bcci Ranji Trophy 2022
Ranji Trophy: The impact of the corona virus is once again affecting the domestic season in India. Following the postponement of the Under-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy last week, the country’s most popular tournament, the Ranji Trophy, has also been hit by the virus. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to postpone the Ranji Trophy in view of the rising number of infection cases. The tournament is scheduled to start on January 13, but the BCCI has imposed a ban. Apart from the Ranji Trophy, the women’s and under-25 tournaments have also been postponed. However, the board decided to continue with the Under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy. Knockout matches are taking place in this tournament.
For the second year in a row, the Corona had an impact on the Ranji Trophy. Due to the corona second wave last year, the board canceled the tournament. Since the inception of this first-class tournament in 1934-35, the tournament has been held for 85 consecutive years. The first time had to be canceled without a single match. Now for the second year in a row there is a risk of cancellation. However, the board hopes to postpone it for a few days at present.
The event is scheduled to take place in these cities.
The 38-team tournament starts on January 13 in different parts of the country. Group stage matches were first played in Mumbai, Thane, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore and Trivandrum. The BCCI on Tuesday announced that it has decided to postpone the Ranji Trophy, Colonel CK Naidu Trophy and senior women’s T20 leagues in view of the rising corona cases.
Along with the Ranji Trophy, the men’s under-25 tournament CK Nayudu Trophy is also scheduled to start this month. The Women’s T20 League is scheduled to take place in February. The BCCI said in a statement that it did not want to compromise on the safety of players and staff and therefore decided to postpone the tournament for now. The board also said it would take a decision on the next steps in view of the situation.
Tournaments also stopped in Bengal.
Earlier, six players of the Bengal Ranji Trophy team had to cancel their practice match against Mumbai due to a corona injury sustained by a support staff member. Mumbai all-rounder Shivam Dubey also floated positively. Since then the start of the tournament has been in doubt. Not only this, in view of the growing number of cases, the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) has decided to suspend all competitions of local cricket till Tuesday, January 4, January 15. Affected tournaments include first division, second division, age group tournaments, women’s cricket, and all-format cricket in the districts.
